HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR PETS
Roslyn J. Motter just loves animals. She has a dog called Indy, and some hens, and a duck called Donna.

If you have a pet, please email us a picture for the website.

We want you to be very caring towards your pets, because they can't speak up for themselves.

COLLAR

If you have a pet with a collar, please make sure that the collar is not too tight. As animals grow, their necks do too! Just run your finger around inside the collar and check that there islots of room for them.

FRESH WATER

Change your pet's water every day and make sure it has enough to drink for the whole day.

BONES

Dogs like a variety of food, just like you. Try to give your dog a raw marrow bone to chew. This cleans their teeth and gives them calcium for their bodies.
Don't give them cooked bones as these can splinter inside them and make them very sick.

EXERCISE

Give your dog plenty of exercise. Play with them outside and in the park. Take them for a walk every day if possible.

PAWS

If it's muddy outside, regularly check between your dog's paws to make sure that balls of mud haven't built up - these can make walking uncomfortable and painful for your dog.

WHERE DO THEY SLEEP?

Make sure your pet has a nice warm bed at night.
You wouldn't like to sleep on concrete, and neither would your pet.
Put out warm bedding - you can buy a nice animals' mattress from the pet store.
Also make sure that your pet has protection from the weather so that when it rains your pet won't get wet.

INJECTIONS

Take your dog or cat at the same time every year to receive their injections. The vet will tell you which ones they need.
There are illnesses that dogs can catch in kennels, so if you leave your pet in kennels when you go on holidays, be
sure to tell the vet because they will need to give your pet a special injection.

ILLNESS

If your pet gets sick, please take them to the vet as the vet will know what to do to make them better.

KEEP THE YARD CLEAN

Your dog will go to the toilet in your yard leaving droppings all over the place. You'll make your parents annoyed if you leave
the mess for them to clean up, so why don't you show what a responsible dog owner you are by cleaning up the mess
yourself? Put the droppings in a plastic bag and be sure not to touch the droppings. Your parents will show you how to scoop  the droppings up safely.

KEEPING YOUR DOG AMUSED DURING THE DAY

If your dog is home alone for long periods of time, it can become bored.
When a dog becomes bored, it can become destructive.
Dogs will dig holes in the garden, or chew on furniture.
The best way to stop this destructive behaviour is to give your dog good quality toys to play with.  They love tennis balls, an old piece of clothing to chew on, a rawhide toy, or an old shoe (don’t leave out your good shoes or your dog might chew on them!).
If possible, leave your dog in the front of your house so it can see the street and people walking by. This is much more entertaining than being in the backyard.
Otherwise, if your dog is in the house, leave the TV or radio on. You could also leave raw bones or doggie treats hidden around the house for your dog to find. Better only leave one or two bones though as this will keep your dog satisfied.

MOST IMPORTANTLY:

Be a responsible pet owner!

Read our sad story about the plight of the New Zealand Kiwi Bird and you'll see that dogs, cats and ferrets have caused them much misery.
Never forget - Pets are for life! Puppies and kittens are cute, but they grow up into adults.
It is very cruel to abandon your pet simply because it grew up!
Make sure your animals are locked up at night so they can't roam the streets. Put a bell around your cat's neck to warn birds.
Dogs and poultry don't mix, so keep your dog away from hens, ducks and geese.
Just be sure to look after your pets so they are always well behaved.

BIRDS IN CAGES

We don't approve of birds in cages as we believe that all birds should be free.
However, if you already have a bird in a cage, don't let it go! These birds would not survive in the wild and would be killed by other birds.
Make sure that your bird has plenty of clean water and enough food to eat.
Also see that it has something to entertain itself with in its cage.

If you have more tips for animal care, please email us with them. We'll put up the best ones for everyone to see.

Take good care of all your animals.

And when you do all these things, your pet will love you for it -
