Roslyn J. Motter is the author of the Doofuzz Dudes series of books.

Why did you decide to write the Doofuzz Dudes books?

I think that these days children spend too much time inside on computers.   When I was a little
girl I used to go treasure hunting on the Knoll near my house and I used to dream of having
adventures.  I also used to read a lot and I would imagine that I was in the story having the adventure.
So I decided to write about a group of children who actually discover buried treasure which leads
them on a fantastic journey to other worlds.

Some of your books have problems which relate to the environment - why is that?

I think we should all be worried about the environment. I am! You'll find that as the Doofuzz Dudes
series progresses, there is more and more talk about the environment.  I know children are very
concerned about this issue.

Do you like animals?

I do like animals. In fact I have many pets - a dog called Indy, ducks and hens. I encourage all the Dudes
and Dudettes that visit this site to email me pictures of their pets.  I love to read stories about their pets.
I detest reading about anything cruel relating to animals. Animals have as much right as we do  to a happy
life but it is becoming harder and harder for them to find a place on earth - we want all their land and their
food for ourselves. Fishermen seem to resent seals catching fish and farmers resent bats taking some
fruit.  Recently I heard a dreadful story about the habitat of a bat colony being burnt down by developers.
We will all pay a big price for this greed one day when the food chain collapses.

Have you ever travelled overseas?

Yes, I love travelling. I've been to many countries - from Eastern Europe to Britain, to many countries in Asia,
and to America and South America. I'd like to go to Scandinavia, Turkey, Morocco and Canada  - but all in
good time.

Where do you get your ideas?

It's hard to say where an idea comes from. They just seem to pop into my head when I least expect it.
However, I must say that every time I go for a bush walk I get some great ideas for some reason or
another. I think the fresh air in the bush clears my head.

 Do you like banana pancakes?

I sure do! I love banana pancakes - in fact there's a place in Thailand near Phi Phi Island that makes these
fantastic banana pancakes for breakfast. My mouth is watering just thinking about them!
I also like rice puddings like the Sandel of Kloon makes.
I love fruit too - especially mangoes, peaches, blueberries, guavas, figs and bananas.
As for chocolates - I particularly love an American brand of chocolates - Mrs. Sees Chocolates - they're
absolutely delicious!

 Have you always written stories?

When I was young I used to write a lot. I used to write stories and poems for my school magazine.
After I left school I stopped writing because I was so busy working trying to pay bills that I lost the incentive
to write. It has just been over the last five years that I got the urge to write again in a big way.
However, back in about 1979 I wrote a jingle and won a harbour cruise for 25 friends. That was the night
Luna Park had a huge fire. I remember sailing past Luna Park and seeing the smoke and hearing the fire
engines.

You've had lots of different jobs - which one did you like best?

I certainly have done some very different things at various periods in my life.  My first job was in accountancy.
In fact, I am a CPA. I worked in tax for twenty five years. At least now I know how to do my
own tax return!
However, after twenty five years I needed a change so I went back to university and studied acupuncture.
I really love doing acupuncture. It is a very creative field of work. While I was waiting for patients to arrive,
I began writing my Doofuzz Dudes series. I must have been waiting a lot, because I've so far written 18 stories!
I only like doing jobs that begin with 'a' ---- accountant, acupuncturist, author.
In my next life I'll do jobs beginning with 'b' ---- biologist, baker, bandicoot farmer.

What children's books do you like to read?

I must confess that I haven't had much time to read anything at all since I've started writing.
However, I used to love reading May Gibb's books about the Gumnut Kids, Snuggle Pot and
Cuddle Pie, as well as all the Anne of Green Gables books. Recently I read a very fantastic
book by Dr. Seuss called the Truffula Tree. I recommend that everyone read this book. I love
to read children's books which convey an important message about the environment.
Oh, and I love Harry Potter and James Bond movies too.

 Does anything make you mad?

Yes, injustices of any kind make me furious. Injustices are mostly against the weak, so it is animals, children, the elderly
 and poor people who suffer.
Also, I hate toll roads. It makes me furious that I have to pay to travel on a great many roads in Sydney now.
I deal with the above matters in future Doofuzz Dudes books!
