We asked Barbara to tell us something about her biodynamic farm because we don't know what biodynamic farming is. This is what she told us - Biodynamics is, in the words of Johann von Goethe (the great philosopher), not about seeing things new but a new way of seeing that we are already familiar with. It is an exciting option where a profound development of agricultural practice is also a path of personal growth.
The origins of Biodynamics are to be found at the beginning of the 20th Century with experienced traditional European farmers who noticed that their animal, plant and soil health were deteriorating. In their experience the application of the then very modern chemical fertilisers did not solve the decline in farm health. A number of these farmers approached Rudolf Steiner, as an individual who was working with renewal of thinking and practice in many aspects of life, including education, economy, medicine, the arts and sciences. They asked him for some practical suggestions for their agricultural circumstances.
Today individuals from many aspects of agriculture, horticulture, forestry and private gardening find common ground in applying the Biodynamic Preparations suggested by Rudolph Steiner in 1924. It remains a new agricultural science.
Biodynamically grown food provides consumers with food that is valued for its flavour and quality.
In order to work with Biodynamic Preparations, it is necessary to keep an open mind and apply the Biodynamic Preparations onto your property for farming and gardening and observe the outcomes. |
